Drug-related arrest could result in life in prison for an Enid man

By Cass Rains, Staff Writer

An Enid man is facing up to life in prison following his arrest on drug-related charges.

Anthony Glenn Barnes, 26, was arraigned Thursday on felony counts of possession of a precursor with the intent to manufacture a controlled dangerous substance and attempting to elude a police officer. He also was charged with a misdemeanor count of driving with his license suspended.

Because of three prior felony convictions, Barnes faces 21 years to life in prison on the drug charge and three years to life on the attempting to elude charge.

According to an affidavit, police attempted to stop a car traveling behind Barnes about 4:45 p.m. Monday that had run a red light. As an officer followed the car, he saw a pickup, driven by Barnes, pass another vehicle then pull toward curb at Elm and Madison. The driver then fled on foot.

Barnes fled from his pickup, and the officer began to follow him through alleyways and neighborhoods before Barnes returned to the pickup and fled from police again, according to the affidavit.

Barnes led four Enid Police Department officers on a chase, running stop signs and driving across grass edgeways and into traffic on North Van Buren, the affidavit states. Barnes was taken into custody when he stopped his truck again and ran to the 1400 block of West Maple.

Officers found the pickup in the 200 block of North Filmore and found four unopened bottles of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. Each bottle contained 100 tablets, which had been purchased at Scheffe’s Prescription Shop at 3:17 and 3:47 p.m. Monday, receipts found with the bottles showed. Police ran a check on Barnes’ license and found it had been revoked.

Barnes was interviewed at Enid Police Department and said he planned to use the pseudoephedrine to manufacture methamphetamine, the affidavit states.

Barnes is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond and was ordered to return to court May 18 for a bond appearance.
