Head Start programs accepting applications

Opportunities Inc. Head Start program is taking applications for enrollment at Carver Head Start Center, 815 S. 5th, and Wilson Head Start Center, 740 N. 10th, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Parents or guardians must bring verification of income, such as W-2 form, 1040 tax form, current TANF card, three current consecutive paycheck stubs or an employer’s statement. The child’s Social Security number and birth certificate also will be required.

Head Start is for 3- and 4-year-old children whose families meet the federal income guidelines and children with disabilities. A screening committee will review all applications. Criteria for enrollment will be used to determine children to be enrolled. Children selected for enrollment must have documentation their immunizations are up-to-date or be in the process of getting them.

Parents of children enrolling in the public school 4-year-old program also may choose to submit an application for their child to be enrolled in Head Start. Children enrolled in both programs participate in developmental activities that assist them to grow mentally, socially, emotionally and physically.

Nationally, Head Start’s main objectives are to provide services that will strengthen families and promote school readiness.
