Garfield County school board, bond elections slated Tuesday

By Tippi Rasp

Staff Writer

School board seat hopefuls in several Garfield County districts will go head-to-head in runoff elections, and one school district is asking voters to approve bond funds Tuesday.

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at local polling sites.

Candidates at Garber, Covington-Douglas and Medford school districts won the right to the runoff races after garnering the most votes in the annual school elections in February.

• For the Covington-Douglas Office 2 seat, Connie Schminke McDonald had 136 votes, Janet Murphy had 83 and Nancy Nelson had 62. McDonald and Murphy will square off Tuesday.

• For the Garber Office 2 seat, Lisa J. Alwert and Travis Schovanec will have a runoff. Alwert had 123 votes, Schovanec had 92 and Christine Vencl had 49.

• In Medford, Joan Kretchmar and Shawn Watson will meet in the runoff. Watson had 166 votes, Kretchmar had 119 and Loren Stout had 70.

School patrons in Billings are asking voters for $165,000 in renovation funds and for another $140,000 for buses.

Billings Public Schools Superintendent Les Justus said the district will retire an eight-year building bond in June.

The first proposition for $165,000 will repair and remodel the schools heat and air units for efficiency, upgrade the school’s computer systems and to repair minor roof leaks.

The second proposition for $140,000 is for the purchase of transportation equipment.

Justus said the district would like to replace the daily route bus, school activity vehicle and Future Farmers of America truck in order to provide safe transportation for all the district’s students, Justus said.
