Pair arrested for alleged identity theft identified

Staff reports

Two people arrested Sunday by Waukomis police on suspicion of involvement in identity thefts in Texas and Oklahoma were identified in Garfield County District Court Tuesday.

Charges had not been filed against Cody Carver, 20, or Amber Williams, 26, but bonds for both were set at $50,000.

Waukomis Police Chief Mike Adams said the two were arrested by officer Logan Niles Sunday after Niles stopped them for speeding on U.S. 81.

Police found many driver’s licenses from Oklahoma and Texas, credit cards, Social Security cards and personal checks, as well as laptop computers, a printer and high-tech equipment in the pickup driven by the pair.

The pickup was reported stolen from Amarillo, Texas.

“We have confirmed many of the driver’s licenses and credit cards and checks were stolen from the Amarillo area,” Adams told the News & Eagle Monday.

Adams estimated the couple had bilked at least 50 victims out of thousands of dollars recently.

Niles stopped the vehicle as it passed through Waukomis about 7 p.m. Sunday. The pickup pulled up to a vacant house, which the female identified as her grandmother’s. Niles was familiar with the house and knew who the owner is.

A license check showed the license was suspended, and during the investigation, Niles found a stolen license plate behind the driver’s seat.

The pair were ordered by Special District Judge J. Bruce Harvey to return to court today to be arraigned.
