Programs will allow EPS enrollment

Enid Public Schools Board of Education held its regular meeting Monday evening and approved a “utilization agreement” with The Commons Methodist Retirement Center to create a 4-year-old program classroom at the center.

The program would not only provide unique intergenerational opportunities for the students and residents but also would create more space which, in turn, would help the school district from turning away so many 4-year-olds.

“We’re short on space to provide all the 4-year-old programs that we would like to provide,” said board clerk Karl White.

The program was made possible through a grant written by Paula Waters of CDSA/Smart Start. The grant was received from Inasmuch Foundation.

The board also authorized EPS administration to develop an agreement with Enid YWCA to have a 4-year-old program at that facility.

Four-year-old programs at The Commons and the YWCA would allow EPS to enroll 80 more 4-year-old students for the upcoming school year.

“The great thing about both of these programs (is) these will be Enid Public School teachers, Enid Public School teacher assistants,” said EPS Superintendent Shawn Hime.

Hime said the teachers in these programs will be held to the same standards as the other teachers in the district and also will be part of a designated school and school faculty.

Building-level teachers of the year in the district have been selected and the selections were approved by the board. Those teachers are Marva Garber, Adams Elementary School; Michelle Gilliam, Coolidge Elementary School; Kay Henderson, Eisenhower Elementary School; Linda Reames, Emerson Junior High School; Craig Liddell, Enid High School; Sheila Johnson, Garfield Elementary School; Jena Bolt, Glenwood Elementary School; Kathy Haworth, Hayes Elementary School; Lisa Brumfield, Hoover Elementary School; Gary Kirtley, Lincoln Academy; Robin Eckert, Longfellow Junior High School; Judy Manjarrez, McKinley Elementary School; Marla Fuxa, Monroe Elementary School; Katie Sanderson, Taft Elementary School; and Pam Gilbreath, Waller Junior High School.

Auditor Patrick Carroll presented his audit of financial transactions for fiscal year 2007-2008. In his audit, Carroll said EPS had “one reportable condition” which was some sub-account money not turned into the activity fund but rather held in a separate account.

Overall however, Carroll said the news was good.

“In the financial situation you have, this is a good audit,” said Carroll.

Aside from routine and consent agenda, the board also approved to allow qualifying members of DECA travel to the international conference in Anaheim, Calif., the revised technology plan, district financial report, EHS and middle school registration guides, kindergarten and 4-year-old program handbook, summer academy information guide, deleting two items from the board policy manual and the employments of Garrett Babb, Longfellow, and Jamie Batchelder, Garfield.

The board also approved a letter of intent to proceed with final evaluation of the performance contract with Siemens Building Technologies, Inc., for the purpose of replacing the existing sod field at the football stadium with a turf field surface.

After an executive session the board voted to approve rehiring the following administrators: Beverly James, principal, Adams; Clark Koepping, principal, Coolidge; Polly Maxwell, principal, Eisenhower; Kathy Edson, principal, Garfield; James Rainey, principal, Glenwood; Jane Johnson, principal, Hayes; Karen Heizer, principal, Hoover; Jan Robinson, principal, McKinley; Kay Kiner, principal, Monroe; Ann Reding, principal, Taft; Kim Jones, principal, Emerson; Doug Stafford, assistant principal, Emerson, Ron Few, principal, Longfellow; Mark Luetkemeyer, assistant principal, Longfellow; John Garvie, principal, Waller; Jon Mitchell, assistant principal, Waller; Jim Beierschmitt, principal, EHS; Floyd Pollet, assistant principal, EHS; Bill Word, assistant principal, EHS; Bill Mayberry, athletic director; Jarry Hillman, principal, Lincoln; and Chris Smith, early childhood coordinator.
