News Briefs for 2-7-08

Ward 6 town hall meeting rescheduled

Ward 6 City Commissioner Todd Ging’s town hall meeting has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at Cherokee Strip Conference Center.

The city commission meeting originally scheduled for that night will be Feb. 21 due to the President’s Day holiday on Feb. 18.

The town hall meeting will include a presentation regarding the March 4 bond issue and sales tax election followed by a question-and-answer session. Ging said the meeting will conclude about 8:30 p.m., and all residents, particularly those in Ward 6, are invited to attend.

Hydrant flow testing is slated today

Enid Fire Department and the city’s water distribution department will conduct hydrant flow tests in a part of Enid today.

The area to be tested is south of Garriott to Wabash and west of Van Buren to Apache. These hydrant tests will begin after 8:30 a.m. and conclude later in the day. Testing was postponed because of bad weather Tuesday.

Periodic flowing and testing of hydrants is necessary to ensure adequate water supply for domestic and firefighting operations, said Fire Marshal Ken Helms.

When hydrants are flowed in an area, the water may become muddy and rusty and remain that way for several hours. Residents should avoid washing laundry during this period to avoid staining clothing. Residents also may want to postpone bathing or showering until the water has cleared. Water within two to three blocks of the affected areas also may become somewhat muddy.

Lottery officials warn of potential scam

Oklahoma Lottery officials have been made aware of a potential scam seeking to gain personal information from Oklahomans.

Recently, a number of people have contacted lottery headquarters regarding an e-mail encouraging them to contact Oklahoma Lottery Commission to claim a cash prize. The phone numbers, e-mail and contact name in the message are not associated with Oklahoma Lottery.

“The Oklahoma Lottery does not use e-mail for winner notifications,” said Jim Scroggins, executive director. “Please use caution when you receive such notifications, because there are numerous scams similar to this that are circulating.”

Oklahoma Lottery security is investigating the e-mail and urges anyone who receives such an e-mail to not provide any personal information.

GOP Women’s Club meeting Friday

Garfield County Republican Women’s Club will host its monthly meeting Friday in the Gantz Center at Northern Oklahoma College Enid.

The luncheon buffet will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by a noon meeting and a talk from guest speaker City Manager Eric Benson. Benson will explain the city of Enid’s two proposed bond issues and the sales tax plan that will be voted on March 4.

He will explain how the funds from each of the three proposals will be used and how much it will increase property taxes.

State Sen. Patrick Anderson and Reps. Mike Jackson and John Enns will give updates on current happenings at the state Capitol.

Guests and interested Republican men and women are welcome to attend. For information, call 233-3788.
