Federal grant to help EFD update its firefighting gear

By Robert Barron, Staff Writer

A $177,000 federal grant will help Enid Fire Department update its firefighting gear so all firefighters have equal protection.

U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas R-Okla., said the funds will defray costs of 77 sets of firefighting apparel. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant was written by Assistant Fire Chief Joe Jackson.

“I’m glad to help the Enid Fire Department earn federal dollars so that they can better protect local residents from possible fire outbreaks,” Lucas said in a prepared statement.

Fire Marshal Ken Helms said the grant will match EFD funds of more than $19,000. The grant will allow the purchase of fire department gear that complies with standards adopted by the National Fire Protection Association.

“Firefighting is a dangerous profession that exposes personnel to all types of hazards and situations,” Helms said.

The equipment to be purchased will ensure firefighters are equipped to handle toxic smoke, gases, excessive heat and possible exposure to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive situations, Helms said.

A portion of the grant also provides equipment and training for firefighter fitness equipment and trained instructors. The training will enable firefighters to maintain physical fitness in areas of strength and cardiovascular health, Helms said.

The Department of Homeland Security evaluated about 21,000 applications from across the United States. The grants are administered by the Department of Homeland Security Preparedness Directorate Office of Grants and Training.
