Crash sends 2 to hospital

By Cass Rains Staff Writer

Two were injured Tuesday morning in a three-car accident at Garriott and Oakwood, according to an Enid Police Department report.

Michael E. Kelly and Carlene M. Forbes both told police they were stopped at the light, facing eastbound on Garriott when they were struck from behind. Zachary L. Stephens, 20, told police he was not sure what happened prior to the crash.

Stephens, 20, who was driving a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am, was transported by Life EMS to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center with incapacitating head, external body and arm injuries. Forbes, 71, who was driving a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, also was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s with incapacitating head and external body injuries.

Kelly, 26, who was driving a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder, told police he was not injured in the crash.

According to the report, Stephens said he was not wearing his seat belt at the time of crash, about 9:43 a.m. The windshield of Stephens’ car was broken and the steering wheel was crushed into the dash, which also was broken.

During investigation of the accident, officers learned Stephens’ driver’s license was under suspension. Due to his medical condition, he was issued citations for failure to devote attention to driving, no insurance, no seat belt and driving under suspension.

Two lanes of eastbound Garriott and a single lane of Oakwood were closed as police, fire and emergency personnel responded to the accident.
