Tax assessor is raising taxes

I opened the April 8 Enid newspaper to read about the county assessor Wade Patterson notice “only some” of Enid residents will see their property tax increase again next year. The article goes on to say on a typical year, every year, 10,000 to 15,000 properties will see a tax increase. It goes on to say that Garfield County has just under 35,000 separate property parcels. That is more than just some increases, that is a hefty percentage, like 29 percent to 43 percent using his numbers.

Apparently everyone sees a tax increase every two or three years. Then, we are told how lucky we are to have such low taxes compared to other cities in the state like Edmond or Broken Arrow. What Mr. Patterson fails to mention is these cities have new schools, new streets, new sewer lines, new water lines, new gas lines and on and on. We have none of the aforementioned new luxuries here in Enid. I doubt we would even if the tax base were identical.

I have 16 rental properties in Enid. I would be more than happy to sell every one of them to Mr. Patterson for less than he has them on the tax roles. Let him try to make a living in this economic climate the way we are taxed and fuel prices increase and cost of repairs continue to rise at an alarming rate. I wish my income went up 5 percent a year, every year like my taxes, but my income doesn’t. Mr. Patterson says he likes to use the cost per square foot to assess property taxes. Anyone in his right mind knows that the age of the property, the condition and many other factors dictate property values. Just the fact one sits next to another doesn’t mean its the same value per square foot I have a long memory and the next time we elect a county assessor, my vote will reflect this tax burden.
