He chose you, the one who was lost

I’m currently leading a Bible study for women about accepting who you are as a daughter of the King. This six-week study the Lord directed me to put together delves into the definition of our identity in Him. This week’s lesson focused on the fact we are the chosen ones.

Do you recall the story Jesus told in Matthew 18:12-14/Luke 15:3-7? The Shepherd realized one of His 100 sheep was missing, so He left the 99 in the open field and went searching for that one until He found it.

He didn’t assume the lost one would find its way back.

He didn’t ignore or neglect that lost one, even though He had 99 more to take care of.

He didn’t say “Oh well, I didn’t really want that one anyway.”

He noticed it was lost and deliberately sought it out.

This tells me you and I have been handpicked by the King (Ephesians 1:5). He sought us out because we are important to Him. We were lost but now are found. He chose us before we chose Him (John 15:16, 1 John 4:10). We were in darkness but are now in the Light (1 Peter 2:9).

The word “chosen” means “to relish, to be selected, marked for favor and special privilege.” The root of “chosen” is “geus,” from which our word “gusto” comes. Dwell on that for a moment. God relishes you and me with gusto!

So that got me to thinking. It’s OK I was picked last for the dodgeball team. It’s OK I wasn’t invited to the party. It’s OK I didn’t get that award or that raise or that recognition I know I should have earned.

I am one of His chosen ones, which means I’ve been selected to be part of a higher order that outweighs what mankind has to offer.

It doesn’t matter where I’ve come from, what my lineage is, where I’ve been, what circumstances I’ve endured. I have been chosen by the Creator of the universe!

Once you’ve accepted this, you discover your identity rests in Him.

Pop singer Pink has a song in which she sings being mistreated, misunderstood, mistaken, being second-guessed and underestimated. “Pretty, pretty please, don’t you ever feel like you’re less than perfect … don’t feel you are nothing, you are perfect to me.” She directs the listener “to change the voices in your head.”

That is Scriptural. We are to transform how we think about ourselves. We are set apart. We are to not be like the world, but to be more like Him (Romans 12:2). We are to think more like Him, to see the world through the eyes of a royal child, to put into practice how a chosen one should act (Philippians 4:8-9). We are to destroy any strongholds, i.e. thoughts, that aren’t of Him (2 Corinthians 10:3-6).

Let’s go back to the story Jesus told about the lost sheep.

Did you know it isn’t necessary to have fences to separate different herds of sheep?

The reason is the sheep know their Master’s voice.

So when the Master calls out, they recognize His voice and they know to come and follow Him. Sheep ultimately sort themselves out from the rest. They ignore the other noise trying to drown out His calling.

The Lord chose you. He chose me.

When you feel lost or the voices in your head are trying to tell you that you’re not good enough, He calls out your name so you can find Him (John 10:27-28).
