Have we got it all wrong on Black Friday?

Today is Black Friday — the day when millions of Americans line up at department stores to get the best deals of the year. Should you choose to join the madness, there are five types of shoppers financial expert Dave Ramsey suggests you look out for.

1) The family: “Either the one where screaming, tired kids are brought along while the parent desperately tries to find a particular item at a bargain, or the ones with SEAL-Team-Six-like coordination who aim to grab all of the assigned items before heading to the extraction point (i.e. the cash register).”

2) The hoarder: “It’s Black Friday, not Y2K. This person is reminiscent of that guy who felt the need to barricade himself in a bunker in the middle of the woods with 20 years’ worth of freeze-dried chipped beef. The hoarder seems paranoid about not taking full advantage of Black Friday and attempts to grab every last one of a particular sales item. Then, after the Friday flurry subsides, they’ll either bring back all the extras they don’t need or sell them online.

3) The planner: “They know the store. They know the route. They know what is where, and they don’t spend too much time basking in the glory of grabbing an item off the shelf because they are too busy heading to the next one. Better be quick if you’re up against one.”

4) The action seekers: “These people are more obstruction than competition. They like the energy of being in the middle of the madness, though they may only be shopping for a DVD. They tend to stand out in the crowd because they are the only ones with a smile on their face. (But if they aren’t careful, another shopper may wipe it off for them.)”

5) The winger: “They are as off-the-cuff as a lost button. They see an item that looks like it would make a good gift, and they grab it. Boom. Christmas shopping done. We should all be so lucky.”

I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to save a few bucks. In fact, I believe God wants us to spend wisely. But, if we are pushing and shoving each other to get the latest game console or a $2 toaster, I think we’ve got it all wrong.

This season isn’t about the amount of gifts under the Christmas tree. It’s about God’s ultimate gift to us: the gift of His Son.

God sent His only Son to the earth 2,000 years ago to be born as a baby. As a man, he was despised by the proud and the religious but became a refuge for the poor and the needy. The blind received sight, the lame walked, those who had leprosy were cleansed, the deaf heard, the dead were raised, and the good news was proclaimed to the poor.

Despite the compassion he displayed, the world rejected him. His greatest act of love was shown when he gave his own life for our sins. God now offers us the free gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. And, it comes with an eternal warranty. That’s better than any deal you will ever find! All you have to do is receive it.

“Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, I know I am not where I want to be, and I want your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for my sins. Please wash me clean from all sin, shame, and guilt, come into my life Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. I ask this in your name Jesus. Amen.”
