Do you want to change in 2013? Think about it.
How? Think about it.
As I said in last week’s column, I have taken a big step in my life and joined TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly). It is a change for the better. I could never look like a runway model, but I would like to be healthier and fit into my clothes better and be able to breathe better and tie my shoes and pick things up off the floor without crawling to a chair for help.
In general, I just choose to make some changes in my life. I want to live a long, healthy life and enjoy every minute of every day. It is up to me to change me.
Every minute of every day, there is something new and improved and “easy” to do, shown on television or in every magazine or newspaper to help us attain a beautiful goal. Those all sound so simple and gratifying, but the truth is, no matter what diet we choose, we have to do the work ourselves. We cannot blame the scales for what we have not done to accomplish our goals.
Let me tell you, folks, there is no easy way to lose weight. But why would we want it to be easy? The most important things in our life did not come easy. It took hard work and sleepless nights to get our college degrees. It takes a lot of dedication to make a marriage work well. It takes a lot of work to keep a home organized and operating smoothly. It takes a lot of discipline to get up and go to work every day.
See, life takes choices, wise choices, to have a satisfying existence.
We pay the price for any wrong choices we make. If I eat a plate of fudge, it shows on the scales. If I eat a healthy salad, it shows on the scales. Which choice should I make? Which choice will I regret later and which will be celebrated?
I was taught when I was just a little kid that I would pay for my own choices. If I didn’t study, I would not make good grades. If I did not make satisfactory grades, I would have to give up certain liberties and fun times until I applied myself to studies. Wise choices don’t begin when we are adults. We have been making choices all our lives — some good, some not so good. But still, it is up to us to decide what we are going to do, or not do, to make life easier and better and more rewarding.
The other day, I saw a television program about a fabulous diet plan that would work miracles. It sounded wonderful, easy, great, fast, and had all the perks we are all looking for. The only drawback is, the miracle has to come from within me. No diet works unless we follow it. I have devised my own miracle program to lose weight. It is working for me.
M: Make a commitment to lose weight and be healthy. Write it out and sign it.
I: I believe I can accomplish my goals. I really WANT to. Just do it.
R: Relax with Yoga or meditation and look within myself.
A: Ask God or my TOPS pals or friends for guidance and support. Then listen.
C: Choose healthy foods with whole grains and little or no sugar. No junk foods.
L: Love myself enough to take better care of myself. I am worthy.
E: Exercise some every day, some way. Move. Walk 10,000 steps.
It is that simple, but not so simple after all. It all depends on me. I am the only one who can do it for me.
I talk about losing weight as if that is the only goal anyone has for the new year, but there are many kinds of aims and goals we wish for. Wishing doesn’t make it so; working does.
Every wise choice we make helps us change or reach or goal.
I don’t know about you, but keeping a diary helps me be accountable. I write down what I eat and when. I keep track of fresh vegetables and fruits and water consumed. I also make a list of things I want to accomplish each day and check them off as I do them. This keeps me on track.
Years ago, I memorized a beautiful poem by Edgar Guest about making choices and living with our choices and liking ourselves:
“I have to live with myself and so, I want to be fit for myself to know.
“I want to be able as days go by, always to look myself straight in the eye.
“I don’t want to stand with the setting sun and hate myself for the things I’ve done.
“I don’t want to keep on a closet shelf a lot of secrets about myself,
“And fool myself as I come and go into thinking that nobody else will know
“The kind of man I really am. I don’t want to dress myself up in sham.
“I want to go out with my head erect. I want to deserve all men’s respect;
“But here in this struggle for fame and pelf, I want to be able to like myself.
“I don’t want to think as I come and go that I’m bluster and bluff and empty show.
“I never can hide myself from me. I see what others may never see.
“I know what others may never know. I never can fool myself, and so
“Whatever happens, I want to be self-respecting and conscience free.”
Wouldn’t that be a wonderful way to live and make choices!
In keeping with my commitment to live healthier, I make these biscuits. We like them.
Whole Wheat Biscuits
2 cups whole wheat flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1⁄4 cup butter
1 cup milk
Mix flour, baking powder and salt together. Cut butter into flour mixture like pie crust. Stir in the milk. Mix until smooth. Knead a few times until smooth. Press dough out with hands until about 3⁄4 inch thick. Cut with round biscuit cutter and place on cookie sheet. Bake in 450-degree oven about 10-12 minutes.

Everyone has their own Christmas traditions
Our tree was brought in fresh from the pasture and secured with boards to keep it upright and sturdy. We made decorations of construction paper chains and popcorn, and had a star covered with tin foil on the top. We had very few Christmas balls or ornaments to hang on the limbs, but it was a beautiful tree every year and we looked forward to any presents left under it.
