Have you lost your thirst for the Lord?

As Oklahoma’s weather becomes hotter, we all need to be drinking more water.

There are natural springs in northwest Oklahoma like the artesian well near the Salt Plains, and nearly everyone has sipped from a bottle of water at one time or another. For the most part, we in America drink what comes out of the tap these days. There isn’t much drawing a bucket from a well or cistern in this country.

Which leads straight into my “sermon” today.

If you’re craving water, from what source are you dipping in?

The Lord was horrified by the behavior of the clans of Israel, His own chosen ones, who had forsaken Him — the Spring of Living Water — for polluted rivers using dirty, broken pots, no less. (Jeremiah 2)

They had grown rebellious and turned away from the One who had saved them and given them the best of everything.

They no longer thirsted for the Lord.

Have you lost your thirst for the Lord, too?

How often do we seek to quench our cravings with what the world has to offer? We rely on others or other things in an attempt to fulfill our needs, rather than relying on the Eternal Sustainer. We make poor choices and get addicted to filth and then find ourselves repeatedly unsatisfied.

Jesus told the Samaritan woman in John 4:13-14, “Everyone who drinks this water (whatever the world offers) will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

He basically told her He alone is the true source of satisfaction. As such, those who taste what He has have no desire to return to the wells of the world.

Once the Samaritan woman realized this, she left her jar (a container for her own desires) behind. She now could drink directly from the well-spring.

Maybe you haven’t lost your thirst but have hit a dry season. You are parched and find yourself thirsting again for the Lord.

“Do not be afraid, O [your name], my servant, [your name] whom I have chosen. For I will pour water on a thirsty land and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on [you and yours].” — Isaiah 44:3

He clearly says He will refresh you and rain down on you if you plant yourself in Him. Test your soil and check for moisture. Don’t just let Him skim the surface with sprinklings from His Word. Soak Him in. The deeper the watering, the deeper the nourishing.

“There is a River and it flows from deep within. There is a Fountain and it frees the soul from sin. So come to this water. There is a vast supply. There is a River that never shall run dry.” — Gaither Vocal Band’s “There Is A River”

The Lord will quench your thirst and satisfy your needs. (Matthew 5:6, John 6:35)

All you have to do is seek Him and believe Him.

For Jesus said in John 7:37, “If anyone is thirsty, let [him or her] come to Me and drink.”
