VBS kids make quilts as a service project

ENID, Okla. — The children of First United Methodist Church gave the gift of warmth and comfort to children who must be taken into foster care.

The 105 kids who attended Vacation Bible School June 3-6 made quilts as their service project, as an act of love from one child to another.

The women of the church quilting group, The Sparrows, have worked with the VBS kids for about 10 years, said Lori Markes, director of children’s education for the church. Typically, the quilts the kids, and the quilting group, make are donated to missions.

This year, it was the quilting group’s idea for the VBS kids to donate their quilts to local kids who find themselves in a frightening situation.

On Monday, before the children boarded the bus for summer camp at Canyon Camp, near Hinton, they presented the quilts to Carole Wade, executive director of Garfield County Child Advocacy Council.
