There is much to be thankful for

There is so much to be thankful for, that I ought to be smiling all the time.

Here are a few reasons why:

• My husband is awesome. Even after 10 years of marriage, I continue to swoon at the sight of him and go giddy when he holds my hand. God created the perfect mate for me. He is my match in every way and I still can’t believe how lucky I was to find “the one.” He is everything I wanted and desired in a man and the Lord saw fit to pair us and mesh our families. I think I’m going to keep him, especially since he recently fixed my washer!

• I get to meet the two most adorable boys on the planet in 19 days. My “baby” brother and his lovely wife adopted these little guys from Ethiopia earlier this year. I am so excited to hold and to play with Ethan and Elijah, I’m pretty sure Aunt Rue’s heart is going to burst from anticipation before they arrive.

• God recently relieved some stress that had been harboring in the background of my brain from the strain of a couple of badly broken relationships. I had long ago forgiven these individuals for the way they had treated me. But the hurt and the awkwardness of living and working in the same community had lingered. In the stretch of a week, the Lord lifted both of those burdens.

• Another reason for me to be thankful is I am reminded of my childhood and my upbringing. As I reflect on certain things, I can’t help praise God for how blessed I am for loving, nurturing parents who taught me so much by example. They led me to the Lord and then stepped back and gave me the freedom to find my path in life. They have always been supportive, even when I got a little sideways at times. I am who I am today thanks to them. I am happy I inherited so many of their traits, even if that means I got a double dose of stubbornness …

• Lastly, God’s grace. I don’t ever think it will get old hearing that old, old story about how my Savior went to Calvary and shed His blood on my behalf because He loved me. He took my place, enduring the cross, so I could be right with God.

Remember the hymn lyrics: “I love to tell the story, ’twill be my theme in glory, to tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.”

Back before Thanksgiving, I downloaded a wallpaper image on my iPhone that says “There is always, always, always something to be thankful for.”

King David took every opportunity to thank his God. Naysayers couldn’t keep him from dancing before the Lord. He repeatedly praised Him, as evidence in the Psalms.

We ought to seek to be more like the man after God’s own heart. There is a reason it is called praise and worship.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” — 1 Chronicles 16:34; Psalm 106:1, 118:1, 118:29, 136:1; Jeremiah 33:11

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.” — Psalm 100:4

“Always give thanks to God the Father for everything …” — Ephesians 5:20
