Somewhere a child is praying for a mom or dad

Each year, November is recognized as National Adoption Month.

The main focus is to find loving, permanent homes for children in foster care. The idea of adoption may have never crossed your mind before this moment, or God may be pulling at your heartstrings once again as you read this morning’s paper.

I believe whatever your circumstance, this is a God-designed appointment. You see, somewhere a child is praying for a mom or dad just like you. Don’t worry if you’re not perfect or you feel unqualified. Those are the kind of people God uses most.

I was 23 when I signed up to be a foster parent. I didn’t know at that time what an adventure my life was about to take. I just knew that somewhere out there a little heart needed me. And, I would learn later just how much I needed her.

She was 4 the first time I met her, but I believe God had us in mind long before that day. He knew one day she’d be 11 and need a mom who could see past a messy room, mismatched socks, and sculptures made out of bubble gum and see her heart.

The other night she brought me a Dixie cup full of chocolate chips and a glass of water with an umbrella in it just to say, “I love you.” She sends me texts from the bus stop with a Scripture for the day and writes me special notes covered in glitter.

Over the past seven years she has taught me about life, but mostly how to love someone completely and totally with every inch of your heart.

He doesn’t always do it in the most likely way, or use the most likely people, but God has a way of turning people into families. Adoption is never God’s second choice.

When you adopt, you are bringing home the very child God created with you in mind. Consider adoption. Who knows, God just may be preparing you for the adventure of a lifetime.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” — James 1:27
