The truth is, we can’t keep our kids from growing up

The other night I watched as a vehicle rolled into the parking lot of a local quick shop. A group of girls scrambled out of the vehicle in cut- off shorts that went straight up their hind ends. The speakers blared as they put out their cigarettes and waddled into the store. A couple of boys with colored hair followed close behind. I then said the following prayer:

“Dear God, please keep my daughter out of vehicles with boys, especially boys with purple hair. And please give me strength if she ever gets out of a vehicle with a cigarette in her hand.

“Make sure that I am standing there in my mom jeans with a fanny pack securely fastened to my waist. It would be even better if I were eating rope licorice out of my fanny pack. Then when I wave really big and remind her that she forgot her eczema cream, please make sure she decides to give up smoking.

“Couldn’t we just skip the teen years all together and move to the stage where she realizes that I really do know everything? — Amen”

The truth is, we can’t keep our kids from growing up. It’s going to happen whether we like it or not. And, there is absolutely nothing we can do about them turning into teenagers. They really don’t prepare you for this kind of thing.

One day you’re walking them into kindergarten and the next day you’re dropping them off two blocks away from the mall, so they aren’t seen getting out of your 1998 Buick (the one with the “I love my honor student” sticker in the back window).

My daughter turns 12 next week. So, I’ve got a few years before cars and purple-haired boys.

But, one of the most important things I can do for her right now is to pray for her future. My prayer is she will choose the right kind of friends and she will make good decisions. Most of all, I pray she discovers the joy of God’s presence through a daily relationship with Jesus Christ.

There’s nothing that takes more faith than parenting. But, the Bible says in Prov. 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

You can trust God has a plan for your child’s life that for exceeds the circumstances of the day. With God, all things are possible. Even teenagers.
