May Fete celebration set for Tuesday

ENID — Enid High School’s 95th May Fete celebration, the annual spring rite of passage into adulthood, will be held 6:15 p.m. Tuesday and preparations are under way.

“Our May Queen chooses everything,” said Sandy Bush, May Fete sponsor chair.

The girls in the May Court once wore elaborate gowns for the celebration, but they now wear spring dresses. And, while the celebration isn’t what it once was, it still is an important Enid High School tradition.

“It used to be everyone was involved,” Bush said. “Elementary choirs would sing and some junior boys would entertain the crowd and be the jesters.”

In fact, May Fete once was a community spring celebration and thousands of Enid residents would attend the festivities.

The crowd has dwindled over the year, but the tradition still continues and, as always, the public is invited to attend.

“It used to be huge,” Bush said. “We’d love to revive the tradition and get the community back out.”

The celebration takes place at Government Springs Park and it begins with the introduction of the May Court, and then the court and senior class promenade around the lake to the gazebo and are seated.

After everyone is seated the queen is crowned, followed by entertainment for the queen. The winding of the Maypole follows.

“We have two Maypoles,” Bush said. “We have sophomores winding one Maypole and the juniors winding the other one.”

May Fete was a popular tradition long ago, but Enid High School has not let it die, and the people of Enid can help to keep a long-standing tradition alive by attending.

“It’s just an old English May Day celebration,” Bush said.

This year’s May Fete Queen Jacy Johnson and Herald Miguel Bretado will lead the seniors’ traditional walk around the park’s lake. She is the daughter of Renee Settlemires and Adrick Johnson. He is the son of Pablo and Luz Elena Bretado.

Honor Attendant is Morgan Leon and her escort is Mark Johnson. She is the daughter of Tony and Tamara Leon. He is the son of Randy and Jane Johnson.

May Court members are:

• Stacia Coffman, daughter of Tony and Robin Coffman, and Milo Allen, son of Andrew and Elizabeth Allen.

• Dedra Fenley, daughter of Carrie Fenley, and Matthew Blakley, son of Terri and the late Tom Blakley.

• Kimberly Gilbert, daughter of Greg and Gloria Gilbert, and Ronnie Clemens, son of Scott and Carol Clemens.

• Elizabeth Nicholas, daughter of Buddy and Jan Nicholas, and Lester Joash, son of Lester Joash Sr.

• Tyresha Washington, daughter of Gary and Vicki Johnson, and Tanner Newby, son of Tom and Robin Newby.

• Brittany Webb, daughter of Tim Webb and Angela Webb, and Gibson Rose, son of Don and Cathy Rose.

• Taylor Zelnicek, daughter of Danny and Pam Zelnicek, and Zachary Siewert, son of Brad and Sally Siewert.

The EHS Big Blue Band and a small vocal group will perform. The EHS Junior ROTC color guard will bear the Oklahoma and U.S. flags.

Baccalaureate for Enid High School seniors will be 7:30 p.m. May 15 at Cherokee Strip Conference Center and graduation will be 7:30 p.m. May 20 at D. Bruce Selby Stadium.
