The Voice who spoke the world into being sings over you

My Facebook friends have endured my obsession the past couple of months — the Swon Brothers of “The Voice”  TV competition. I am a huge fan of these boys from Oklahoma, who have the most incredible harmony.

During this week’s finals of the show, these Muskogee natives under the direction of fellow Okie Blake Shelton were among the Top 3 performers, and they repeatedly blew the judges away (and me) with how their voices blended so well. I can’t help but melt every time they harmonize. There is something about families who sing together!

The church has long been the base for many music careers and Zach and Colton Swon are no different. They have continually credited the Lord for their talent and their success.

Music continues to be a universal language that bonds people of every nation, creed and race together. Music also bonds us with the Trinity, too.

King David obviously felt connected to the Lord through his Psalms, many chapters of which serve as the singer/songwriter’s own album. That is why we have a tendency to have praise and worship as a portion of every church service and faith-based event. There is something wondrous about singing to God.

Oklahoma native Dennis Jernigan’s contemporary track “When the Night is Falling” keeps coming to mind:

“When the night is falling, when the day is done

I can hear you calling, ‘Come.’

I will come while you sing over me.

When the night surrounds me, all my dreams undone,

I can hear you calling, ‘Come.’

I will come while you sing over me.

When the night would hide my way,

I will listen until I hear you say,

How I love you, child, I love you.”

Did you catch the line about the Father singing over you? That is taken from Zephaniah 3:17: “The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

That should be music to your ears.

The Creator of the universe delights in you. The Redeemer rejoices over you. Our Counselor and Friend sings over you because He loves you.

Now, not everyone has pitch- perfect voices. I’m sure there have been times you’ve had to stifle a laugh because the person next to you in the pew has been royally off-key or, as my father used to say, “can’t carry a tune in a bucket.” But his or her heart in is the right place.

Some folks, as the 16-year-old winner of “The Voice” does, were born with the talent to sing. It comes as naturally as breathing.

My point is Our Father God has a voice that spoke the world into being and can soothe the human soul with a whisper. Since the dawn of mankind, He has wanted to commune with us, talk with us, have a relationship with us. He has always counted each and every one of us important from our first cry to our last earthly breath.

Will you come to Him today and let Him sing over you?
