Time to get unmasked

ENID, Okla. — Are you curious about Jesus and what He thinks about women and their role in society? Then the upcoming women’s retreat “Unmasked” is the place to get this answered.

Speaking this year is Carol Sallee, an Oklahoma native who is ready to share how women in Jesus’ time (as seen in the New Testament) came to Him with numerous hurts, habits and hang-ups and went away spiritually changed and charged with hope.

This is an opportunity to take a spiritual view of a Savior who truly loved women, said Sallee in a recent phone interview.

“Jesus was open to all types of women,” she said. “He went against all social norm. He was so accepting. He wants women to be who God created them to be. Not what society says they have to be.”

Sallee, who has been speaking at retreats across the country for 12 years, said women need to know they are not alone in their faith, much like the women featured in the New Testament.

“The struggles are the same, just packaged different,” Sallee said.

Teenagers who attend the non-denominational women’s retreat on March 7-8 at First Baptist Church in Enid may recognize Sallee. Since 2008, she has been the speaker for the girls’ abstinence program in Enid Public Schools, sponsored through Hope Outreach.

“They will know me as the woman who talked about sex for an hour,” Sallee commented. She encourages young women ages 13-18 to attend.

“This is not your mom’s tea party. This is important for your spiritual growth,” she said.

The retreat will allow women of any age to focus on their faith without the distractions.

Sallee said she understands it’s tough to take a weekend to attend a two-day retreat. However, she said, it is essential to have that one-on-one with the Lord because the payoff is limitless.

“Women need other women in their walk with Christ. Women were created for relationship,” she said. “I love to see how He works! If you’ve been before, it won’t be the same as last year.”

Joining Sallee on stage will be worship leader Amy Hill. The Texas native has a ministry with Sallee called ThreeFold Ministries and is looking forward to reuniting with her friend.

“We make sure the entire program is cohesive. There is an anointing when we come together,” Hill said in a recent phone interview. “I’m really excited for this.”

Hill has been leading worship for about 15 years and has been singing for as long as she can remember.

She said the women’s retreat will offer ladies a real renewing and encouragement to keep going.

“As women sometimes we get so wrapped up in serving everyone around us, which is a good thing. But we forget to take the time to strengthen our relationship with God. Retreats do that,” Hill said.
