Friend walks with me through life

The story of Naomi and her daughter-in-law, Ruth, is one of the most beloved stories of friendship in the Bible. Naomi’s sons had both died, leaving her daughter-in-laws Ruth and Orpah as widows.

Naomi decides to leave their home and move to the land of Judah. She begs the women to go back to their homeland and to their gods. But Ruth refuses.

Ruth then tells Naomi, “Every place you go, I will go. Every place you live, I will live. Your people will be my people. Your God will be my God. And where you die, I will die. And there I will be buried, I ask the Lord to punish me terribly if I do not keep this promise: Only death will separate us.”

This week, my friend gave me the kind of advice you don’t want to hear. She meant only the best, but I still was wounded.

In the end, she reminded me she loved me no matter what. It doesn’t matter if we always agree on everything. What matters is we are there to listen and offer our support.

I guess you could say that she is my Ruth. She promised to walk with me through this life and has never left my side. She is determined to stand with me no matter what road I take.

Jesus gave us the true definition of a friend when he said: “Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” — John 15:13-15

I love the quote that says, “Friendship is not about who you’ve known the longest but who came and never left your side.”

It’s those kind of friends that make the difference. Take time today to thank God for the friends he has placed in your life. Then, let them know how much you appreciate all the laughter, prayers and support. Most of all, thank them for loving you when you’re impossible to love. For, there is no truer friend than that.
