Set your mind to achieve your goals

ENID, Okla. — How do you set your mind to something? Think about it.

One of my friends is a beautiful lady who set her mind on losing weight. She exercises every day of the world. She is conscious of every bite of food and drink she puts in her mouth. She definitely has a mindset of what her goals are.

We have all known people who decide they are going to quit a habit or begin a new habit and they just do it. They set their mind on something and their mind rules their every action.

What makes a person develop a deep-down desire to succeed?   

When my grandmother drove a team of horses hitched to a buggy to Indian Territory in a wagon trail, she did not know what was ahead at every turn. She did not know what awaited her over the next hill. But there was no turning back so she pressed forward with the rest of the people on that mission. It was the goal that kept her going. Not the daily occurrences.

When Grandpa walked behind that plow to turn the sod of their first farm, I know he kept his eyes on the land marks so as to plow a straight furrow. He did not think in terms of how tired he was, nor how much his back ached, nor how thirsty he was, nor how many more hours he had to work before the sun went down. His only goal was a newly turned field.

The people who are successful today are those who set their goals and work diligently toward those goals. They may have a detour or two, but even with those unknown problems along the way, they take them in stride and press on. They know that success is intentional.

Where will you be five years from now? Or one year from now? Age had little to do with whether a person has goals in life. Some of the best planners are older people who have retired from a busy life and set new goals for themselves. Seldom do busy people who retire, retire to nothing. They are usually busier than when they went to a paying job daily. They love being of service to others, so they become human doers instead of human beings only.

A mind set is a spirit bent on doing something specific, no matter what it is. We have to make goals for ourselves whether to lose weight, exercise, help others, getting an education, or other disciplines. Here is a formula to help you plan your course:  I want to ______________________, so I will _____________________________ to ______________________ by _________________. Be specific and fill in the blanks yourself to suit your own goals and needs. It seems to keep us on track better if we write down our objectives and desires. We cannot measure success without a definite goal.  

It took me 35 years to reach my goal and graduate from college. I did not go all the time, but I enrolled a semester at a time as I could afford it and make time in my work schedule and making a home. Finally, I put it all together and got a degree. It was one of the joys of my life to have achieved it. It was for me and me alone that I did it. I had my mind set on getting that diploma.

Jim was equally determined to be in the Marine Corps. He tried to join when he was 15 and couldn’t, so he went back home and tried again at 16. This time, he was accepted.  He not only had a mindset, but he was determined to the point of being “hell-bent” to be a Marine. The rest is history as once a Marine, always a Marine. The disciplines he learned in the Corps has followed him all his life and has made him who he is today. If one can conceive it, and believe it, one can achieve it.
