All we see is mountain after mountain

My daughter and I rode our bikes to the store the other day to pick up a few things for dinner. As we went under the bridge, we shouted our names to hear them echo. Then she showed me how to ride your bike with no legs.

I watched my heart tagging along behind me, and for a second everything else didn’t matter. All the struggles that led us to that moment seemed to fade in the distance. As we arrived home exhausted and pushing our bikes up the hill, I thought about how hard it’s been for us this year.

We are scaling the biggest mountain we have ever faced, but someday, we’ll get to the other side, all battered and bruised from the climb. And, when we look back at the mountain, it won’t seem that big after all.

Then we’ll turn around and right before us will be another one. Then we’ll climb that one too, and the next one, and the next after that. All we see is mountain after mountain, but God sees things a little differently.

Actually, most of the time, God and I are on two totally different planets. He sees a meadow with butterflies and beautiful flowers, and all I see is a bunch of weeds with mosquitos flying around waiting to attack me, so that I can spend an entire evening being miserable and rubbing Calamine lotion all over my body.

He sees our problems, not as mountains, but as opportunities to believe in the impossible. It takes faith to stand before an unscalable mountain and believe that God can make something good out of it.

If you find yourself at the bottom of Mount Everest, look over and God will be right there beside you ready to climb with you. He’s climbing right along beside my daughter and I, too.

Thank goodness, because if she pulls that “Look Mom, no feet thing” again, we might have a problem.

“I look to the mountains; where will my help come from? My help will come from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let you fall; your protector is always awake. The protector of Israel never dozes or sleeps. The Lord will guard you; he is by your side to protect you. The sun will not hurt you during the day, nor the moon during the night. The Lord will protect you from all danger; he will keep you safe. He will protect you as you come and go now and forever.” — Psalms 121 (GLT)
