Consider Him who endured before us

“Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder/At the mention of Your Name/Jesus, Your Name is Power, Breath, and Living Water/Such a marvelous mystery.” — the contemporary worship tune “Revelation Song”

I woke to the sound of thunder this morning. It made me smile, listening to the sound of rumbling followed by the torrent of rain hitting the window. The power of His creation continues to awe me.

Days before, when I was driving home, I saw a rainbow peeking out of the clouds. I couldn’t help of think about God’s promises.

I’ve been monitoring the Facebook page of a friend who is walking where Jesus walked and she’s been posting real-time pictures. It has been wondrous thought, thinking about Him who was clothed in flesh for a brief moment and experienced human struggle on my behalf.

Have you taken time lately to consider Him? To marvel in the joy and excitement that comes from knowing Him? To pause and call out to Him?

We’ve been wandering around in Hebrews for a couple of years and my pastor has zoned in on the first verses of chapter 12 this month. I’ve had this passage highlighted for a while, but I didn’t really consider it until now. Here is Hebrews 12:1-3 paraphrased:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by our biggest fans, let us throw off everything that holds us back and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with hope the agonizing struggle in front of us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus (not on ourselves), the pioneer and finisher of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning your and my shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who put up with all the human hostility, so that you and I would not loathe life and lose heart.”

The word “consider” means to concentrate, to analyze, to focus.

So I ask again, have you taken time lately to concentrate on Him? To analyze His life and what He did in the 33 years He walked this earth? To focus on who He is and His character?

This passage in Hebrews is about Him. He is my example. He never lost sight of the end result in the midst of His suffering. He endured, refusing to make excuses.  

He could have said to heck with it and snuffed out all the haters. Think about it — the Creator of the universe was being mocked by His own creation.

But He didn’t.

He let the nails be driven into His hands and feet. He hung there naked for all to see. He faced the ultimate enemy of death and rose victorious. And He did all of it for you and me, to save us from the same fate!

Jesus wanted us to know the joy of knowing God. He doesn’t want us to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders, to let circumstance pin us down and keep us from moving forward.

If we consider Him, then we forget about what is happening all around us. If we consider Him, then we can say, “Here I am Lord, show me the way!” If we consider Him, then we will daily endure until He completes us and we join Him on the other side.
