Helping us to understand the power of worship

Mornings at our house are busy as we rush to find a missing shoe or last night’s homework assignment. But, one of the things I get to enjoy each morning as I get ready for work is the sound of my daughter singing in the shower. Her hits range from Taylor Swift to her favorite Disney songs. The other day as I was putting on my makeup, I heard these lyrics echoing through the bathroom door …

“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders / Let me walk upon the waters / Wherever You would call me / Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander / And my faith will be made stronger / In the presence of my Savior” — “Oceans” by Hillsong United

As I listened to my daughter worship, I began to reflect on how often I limit my worship time to 30 minutes on a Sunday morning. Instead of praising God in the midst of the week, I spend most of the time complaining about how things aren’t going my way. Then I wonder why I feel so defeated and burned out.

Perhaps, if you and I could understand the power of worship, we would have a change of heart.

In 2 Chronicles 20, Jehoshaphat not only understood the power of worship, he used it to defeat an entire army. Jehoshaphat, who was the king of Judah, had been given warning that a vast army was coming against him. After calling a fast for the entire nation and wholly seeking the Lord, his men assembled themselves before the enemy. Jehoshaphat then implemented a strategy no one saw coming. He sent men ahead of the army to sing and praise the Lord! As they worshiped, the Lord sent an ambush and the enemy was defeated.

“After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.’ As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another.” — 2 Chronicles 20:21-22

When God’s people begin to praise and worship Him, it sends the enemy running! Whether it’s singing off key in the shower or washing the dishes, make thanksgiving, praise and worship a part of your daily experience. Then watch and see as the power of God is released in your life.

Case Crayenord said, “Not rituals or structures, not mountaintops or valley floors; God is the goal we must seek, and that’s what makes for true worship.”
