Elliott, Newby garner scouting's highest honor

Two members of Boy Scout Troop 11, Alec Michael Elliott and Tanner Lee Newby, will be honored at an Eagle Court of Honor Saturday.

Boy Scout Troop 11 is sponsored by the First United Methodist Church of Enid.

Elliott, 13, is a student at Waller Junior High School and is the son of Cliff Elliott and Vicki Elliott, both of Enid. Elliott joined scouting as a Cub Scout, and has achieved their highest award, Arrow of Light, and was awarded The God and Family Religious award. At Troop 11, Elliott has participated in extended summer camping experiences at Camp Tom Hale in Oklahoma and Camp Alexander at Lake George, Colo. He has served as patrol leader and assistant senior patrol leader and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. He is scheduled to attend Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in 2009.

Elliott played summer youth baseball on both the Enid seventh-grade team and E.J.R.T. league teams. He constructed and installed signs promoting sportsmanship at area baseball fields for his Eagle Scout project.

Tanner Newby, 16, is a junior at Enid High School and is the son of Tom L. Newby and Robin Newby, of Enid. Newby also joined scouting as a Cub Scout and was awarded the Arrow of Light. He has been active in Troop 11 since 2003 and has held several positions and responsibilities including patrol leader, senior patrol leader and Order of the Arrow representative. Newby has attended extended summer camp at Will Rogers Scout Camp and has participated in the Higher Adventure Program at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He also attended the National Scout Jamboree.

Newby plays on the EHS football team and participates in EHS show choir. He created permanent holders for flags on veteran’s graves at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Only two percent of Scouts attain scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. An Eagle Scout must complete 21 merit badges and demonstrate leadership by organizing and carrying out a service project that benefits the community.
