CASA summer training set

The Fourth Judicial District Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program will begin a new training session this summer. The class will meet for three hours every Thursday evening June 5 through Aug. 7 at the Garfield County CARE Campus, 1002 E. Broadway. There is no fee, but trainees must pass an interview and a background investigation prior to acceptance into the class.

Volunteers will be trained in family dynamics, needs of children, cultural issues, juvenile law, interview skills and court procedures as well as other topics, all of which are standard in the national CASA curriculum. Upon completion of the training, each volunteer will be sworn in as an officer of the court by Associate District Judge Tom Newby. The role of a CASA is to make recommendations to the court in the best interests of a child or children for which he or she is advocating.

Adults 21 years old or older who have a desire to help abused or neglected children can call Ruth Ann Replogle, volunteer coordinator, at 242-1153, for an application or for more information.
