The long-deserted old Homeland building should be bursting with new business in coming months.
Hunt Properties of Dallas announced Wednesday that PetSmart and rue21 will join T.J. Maxx at Enid Crossing.
In June, Hunt Properties informed City Manager Eric Benson that it had finalized a more-than $1.75 million deal. The first retailer expected to open is T.J. Maxx by Christmas.
“We commenced construction in the middle of June at the old Homeland building and intend to have tenants open for business prior to the end of the year,” said Jerry Williams, Hunt Properties president.
According to PetSmart’s website, the company is one of the largest speciality pet retailers of services and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets. The store can offer a “broad range” of products and services, from boarding to grooming and training. It also offers adoptions in-store through PetSmart Charities.
The third retail store, rue21, calls itself the “fashion destination” for “girls and guys,” according to its website. Selling apparel and accessories geared toward teenagers and young adults, the store aims for “fashion-forward” and “affordable” products.
“This project wouldn’t have been feasible without the help and guidance of the representatives of the city of Enid and its staff,” Williams said. “Everyone we encountered did a remarkable job, and it was a pleasure to work with them.”
T.J. Maxx is scheduled to be the first of the three to open its doors.
The business must open by Dec. 25; otherwise, Hunt Properties would lose a sales tax rebate.
The city will return 1 percent of every sales tax dollar collected by businesses in the old Homeland building, for a total of $950,000. The funds may be collected for up to 15 years, but officials are estimating the maximum to be collected in a shorter span of time — possibly six or seven years.
