Residents warned of out-of-state property deeds for $83

ENID, Okla. — Officials are warning residents about letters from a company in Delaware offering copies of property deeds for $83.

Garfield County Assessor Wade Patterson said his office can provide records pertaining to a property for free to the owner of the property. A deed is also available for $1 at the county assessor’s office.

“That got brought to my attention,” Patterson said of the letters. “Someone had one last week. Over the weekend, I had more people asking about it.”

The letters have been circulating across the state, and more likely across the region, Patterson said.

The letters from Record Transfer Services have “deed Processing Notice” printed on the front, with a form to detach and return with a check for $83.

“We checked around the state, and it’s going around,” he said. “Any deed information you need is on file in the county registrars office.”

Patterson said the letters come from a company hoping people will fall prey and open themselves up for exploitation.

“It’s a company out there fishing and hoping they’re going to get some people to bite,” he said. “All people have to do is contact us or call us if they have questions.

“If you have any concerns, always call here at the county assessor’s or county clerk’s office. We’re here to represent you.”

A call to an 888 number for Record Transfer Service reached a representative named Ethel, who refused to provide a last name.

She said the letters sent out have a disclaimer stating the company is not affiliated with any government agency and that copies of deeds are available at offices in the counties where the property is located.

She said is was not a scam but a service the companies offer.

“Basically, it’s like if you have a house in another county or you live somewhere else in the United States,” she said.
