Okla. lawmaker proposes $20B cut in food stamps

TULSA, Okla. — An Oklahoma congressman is proposing cutting $20 billion in spending over 10 years for the nation's food stamps program in the latest farm bill.

Republican U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas, the chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, tells the Tulsa World that the proposed reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program "won't take a calorie off the plate of anyone who needs help."

To achieve the savings, Lucas proposes eliminating categorical eligibility, a state option that allows residents who qualify for other assistance programs to still get full SNAP benefits.

His proposal has come under fire from liberal groups angry about cuts to the food stamps program.  Forty-three states, including Oklahoma, have some form of categorical eligibility.

Formal writing of Lucas' proposed farm bill begins May 15.
