‘Gardening in a Drought’

8 a.m. Saturday

OSU Extension Office, 316 E. Oxford

Learn all about how to keep your plants healthy during drought at a special workshop this Saturday at the OSU Extension Office.

Sessions will provide information on how to use the Mesonet to decide how much water you need; how to use plasticulture; and the methods of watering and their pros and cons, including rain barrels, sprinklers, soaker hoses and drip irrigation systems.

During a tour of the Master Gardener Arboretum, uses of mulch will be explained. There also will be a tour of the Oklahoma Proven Garden — a plant evaluation and marketing program designed to assist in selecting the best plants for Oklahoma’s weather.

Cost of the workshop is $35, which includes an information packet. Proceeds will go toward Garfield County Master Gardener Demonstration Garden and Arboretum.

Weather and Disaster Preparedness Day

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday

Oakwood Mall

Paying attention to when severe weather might strike is important in Oklahoma. With that in mind, local emergency authorities will converge at Oakwood Mall Saturday for Weather and Disaster Preparedness Day.

Organizations that will attend include Enid and Garfield County Emergency Management, as well as emergency management groups in Alfalfa, Kingfisher, Major and Woods counties; Vance Air Force Base Emergency Management; and state of Oklahoma emergency management.

Enid Fire Department will be on hand, as well as Life EMS, Enid Police Department and Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

National Weather Service Norman’s Rick Smith will speak at 1 p.m. near Dillard’s, on the west end of the mall. Enid Amateur Radio Club also will be on hand, showing off hardware and programming weather radios.
