Magnitude 3.8 earthquake rattles area near Cherokee

CHEROKEE, Okla. — U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.8 earthquake Thursday morning southeast of Cherokee.

USGS recorded the quake at 6:48 a.m. 8 miles southeast of Cherokee, or 27 miles northwest of Enid. The quake registered at a depth of 3.1 miles.

Cherokee resident Michael Utterback, who works at Farmer’s Cooperative, said he didn’t feel the quake but heard it.

“I just heard a rumble,” he said.

A dispatcher at Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Office said he did not feel the quake, and the office had not received any calls about it.

The earthquake was the second one in as many days in the area to register more than 3.0.

A 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck between Enid and Medford Wednesday afternoon.

That quake occurred at 5:15 p.m. and was centered about 9 miles south-southwest of Medford, or about 20 miles north-northeast of Enid. The depth registered at 3 miles.

Earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 3.0 generally are the smallest felt by humans, according to geologists. Damage doesn’t usually occur with earthquakes below magnitude 4.0.
