Snow-where to go: Police follow footprints to alleged robber

ENID, OK — Enid Police Department arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the armed robbery of a convenience store Tuesday morning after following his footsteps in the snow back to his residence.

Joseph James Turbyfill was arrested at his residence on Field Drive on complaints of armed robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and unrelated county warrants.

About 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, two clerks were working at Conoco, 1623 S. Van Buren. A female clerk was outside the business clearing the sidewalks when she saw Turbyfill walk across Van Buren from an area near the motel and go inside the store, Capt. Jack Morris said. A male clerk inside the business behind the counter was filling a bucket with ice melt and had his back turned.

Turbyfill allegedly placed a knife to the male’s clerk’s back and told him to open the cash register, according to police. The clerk did as Turbyfill said and opened the register.

The female clerked attempted to go back inside the store but Turbyfill told her to, “Shut the door or I will kill him,” Morris said. The female clerk closed the door and waited outside.

As Turbyfill left the store, Enid Police Department Officer Andy Morris pulled into a parking spot in front of the store. Turbyfill began walking north along the store’s sidewalk before the female clerk told Morris the store had just been robbed.

Turbyfill crossed Van Buren to the east as Morris followed. Turbyfill walked between Save-A-Lot and Lazy H Motel. Morris saw Turbyfill jump a fence between the two businesses.

Morris was able to track Turbyfill’s footprints in the snow to his residence in the 1600 block of Field Drive. Responding officers set up a perimeter around that residence.

Officers spoke with three women at the residence and found a man also resided at the residence, identified as Turbyfill.

Turbyfill admitted to officers he committed the robbery. After he was told he was under arrest, he attempted to flee from the residence but was apprehended.

Officers recovered an undisclosed amount of cash, a 4 to 6-inch folding pocket knife believed to have been used in the robbery and clothing Turbyfill was wearing during the robbery.
