‘Noah’ not too biblical, but it’s entertaining

If you’re the kind of person who takes the Bible literally — word for word — you might be a little disappointed by “Noah.”

If however, you’re at the theater to see a good — not great — piece of entertainment, you’re likely to enjoy it.

As was probably the same with a lot of other people, I was curious to go see Darren Aronofsky’s newest film because I wanted to see to what extent it adhered to the biblical text.

The answer? Not much.

I wasn’t expecting it to, so I wasn’t disappointed. Instead, there were other aspects of the film that disappointed me.

If I could pick out the one thing I didn’t like most about the movie, it would be the Watchers — tall, lumbering rock-like beings described in other reviews as crosses between “The Lord of the Rings’” Ents and The Thing from Marvel’s “Fantastic Four” franchise.

The Watchers are the film’s version of the Nephilim, a race of beings barely hinted at in the book of Genesis: “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” (Gen. 6:4, KJV)

The Watchers have this weird stuttering way of walking in the movie (it’s really hard to describe; you have to see it to understand), and it really was kind of a big distraction.

I won’t ruin what the Watchers do in the movie, but they have a pretty significant role not stated in the Bible.

Everything else is decent to good — even the made-up bits.

Russell Crowe was great as Noah, and Jennifer Connelly held her own as Naameh, Noah’s wife. Anthony Hopkins plays a somewhat significant role as Noah’s father, Methuselah, and Ray Winstone is a pretty decent — albeit sort of one-dimensional — bad guy in Tubal-Cain. Even Emma Watson, she of “Harry Potter” fame, was more than serviceable in her role (which I don’t want to mention, because I don’t want to give out spoilers).

All in all, without diving too deeply into key parts of the plot, I would call it an above-average film. I don’t feel too confident about giving out star ratings because I’m not experienced at reviewing films, but if I had a say, I guess I would give it 3-3.5 stars out of 5.

In case you missed it last week, the Oakwood Enid 8 theater at the mall will show the movie at 12:05 p.m., 3:15 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. throughout the coming week. You can purchase tickets online at starplexcinemas.com/locations.php?theaterid=1047.
