An arrest warrant is issued in EPD homicide investigation

ENID, Okla. — Documents filed against an Enid man arrested in Kansas shed more light on a homicide that occurred Monday evening.

A charge of felon in possession of a firearm was filed Tuesday in Garfield County District Court against Michael Laurence Berdahl, and a warrant with a $100,000 bond was issued for his arrest.

The charges stem from the shooting death Monday evening at 413 W. Walnut of David Richard Wimmer, 43, being investigated by Enid Police Department.

At 6:48 p.m. Monday, a man who lives at 413 W. Walnut with Berdahl, arrived to find Wimmer shot to death in his home, according to an affidavit prepared by EPD Detective Shawn Ramsey. Officers noted a single gunshot wound to Wimmer’s chest and an empty holster on the bed next to Wimmer.

The roommate said he had been at work since 6 p.m., and went to buy groceries and got home at about 6:45 p.m. He said he noticed Wimmer lying in Berdahl’s bedroom.

The man said he thought Wimmer was either petting the dog or passed out drunk, but when he checked on Wimmer he was cold to the touch. He said he got up and looked around the room and saw the empty holster for a .22-caliber revolver belonging to Berdahl.

The man said he attempted to call Berdahl but could not reach him.

Ramsey asked Berdahl why he would want to kill Wimmer. Berdahl said either Wimmer came over and scared him or Wimmer came over “acting his normal self” and the two got into a fight, according to the affidavit. Berdahl also said Wimmer was a larger person, and when he came around and was drunk he always “acted a fool,” according to the affidavit.

Ramsey was able to view video surveillance from a nearby building and saw Wimmer and Berdahl entering and exiting the house at 413 W. Walnut several times.

At 5:53 p.m., Berdahl was seen leaving the residence in a white Buick Roadmaster and not returning. Wimmer was last seen out in the yard of the residence at 5:20 p.m.

EPD issued a teletype Tuesday to surrounding agencies for Berdahl and a white four-door Buick Roadmaster.

Police in Anthony, Kan., contacted Enid police after locating the vehicle at a residence there.

Capt. Jack Morris said in a press release Tuesday that Anthony police found narcotics in Berdahl’s possession. EPD detectives went to Kansas Tuesday and spoke with Berdahl, who “made admissions regarding his actions at the time of the shooting,” Morris said.

Morris also said in the release Berdahl was found in possession of the firearm believed to be used in the shooting of Wimmer.

Berdahl has prior felony convictions for violating the National Motor Vehicle Theft Act in 1968, alien smuggling in 1989 and aiding and abetting illegal entry into the United States in 1989.

Morris said paperwork was being completed to be sent to Garfield County District Attorney’s Office for review concerning the homicide.
