Events to GET OUT for this weekend 10/23/09

THEATER

“Turn of the Screw”

8 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Gaslight Theatre, 221 N. Independence

Get ready for an evening of spine-tingling chills as Gaslight presents the classic ghost story “The Turn of the Screw” this weekend and next. A special 10 p.m. performance is scheduled for Halloween night.

The play tells the tale of a young governess hired to care for two orphans at a lonely country estate plagued by supernatural visitors. Only the governess can see the ghosts; only she suspects two former servants are controlling the children for some diabolical purpose.

Director Chistianne Chase describes “The Turn of the Screw” as a powerful psychological study of the reality of evil and a tour-de-force for actors.

“Instead of screamers and slashers, Henry James chose to portray the ghosts as eerie extensions of everyday reality, which makes the story so much more interesting,” she said. “The terror is all in the minds of the audience members who must draw their own conclusions about the reality of the ghosts and the sanity of the governess.”

Chelsea Davis and Karen Staples portray the troubled governess and the doubting housekeeper. The seemingly innocent children Miles and Flora are played by Tabor Kvasnick and Emily Cinnamon. Matt Johnsen plays the uncle and Jonathon Suttmiller and Jacque Walker appear as well.

The Gothic-inspired set is the brainchild of Ken Kelsey. Sound and light effects are by Mitch Walters and technical director Matt Johnson. Staples and Donna Patocka are in charge of constructing the period dress, and Gilbert Santillan underscores the show with special music.

Call 234-2307 for tickets.
