Gaslight presents ‘iconic’ American musical

Gaslight Theatre and director Christianne Chase are bringing an American music theater classic to the stage with the help of classical opera singer Jeffrey Ambrosini.

Gaslight Theatre presents “South Pacific,” the Rogers and Hammerstein classic, for seven performances starting July 17. Evening performances begin at 8 p.m. and the Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and available at the Gaslight Theatre Box Office, 221 N. Independence. Call 234-2307.

“It’s iconic,” Chase said of bringing “South Pacific” to the stage. “It is a lifelong dream to do this.”

Ambrosini said he saw the movie when he was a child and always wanted to play Emile de Becque, the leading man.

“The music drew me in,” Ambrosini said.

The production is filled with popular tunes such as “Bali Ha’i,” “There’s Nothin’ Like a Dame” and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair.” Chase said Ambrosini’s rendition of “Some Enchanted Evening” left her speechless the first time she heard it.

Playing opposite Ambrosini is Kristi Browne as Nellie. Pamelyn Guillory, Chuck Lipps and Joe Redman also play main characters in the production set as World War II has just begun.

Ambrosini said “South Pacific” is a beautiful love story.

“What they have to say is so important that they have to sing it,” Ambrosini said.

Chase and Ambrosini said the current Broadway revival of the musical — and Gaslight’s production — are timely, as the country is again engaged in war.

Chase said she believes World War II veterans will enjoy the show, although tickets may not last long.

Seats for the Friday and Saturday performances are getting “very, very full,” and Chase said she anticipates sell outs.
