Shakespeare in the Park “The Tempest”

8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Government Springs Park

For 15 years, William Shakespeare’s immortal words have resounded through Enid’s Government Springs Park in summer Shakespeare in the Park productions.

The tradition was started by local teacher Mary McDonald and others who had seen similar productions produced in other communities.

“We thought, ‘we can do this,’” she said.

McDonald is directing this year’s 15th Shakespeare in the Park production, “The Tempest,” which is a romantic-tragic-comedy, in which banished Duke-turned-magician Prospero pledges “to break his staff and drown his book.”

The production is free each evening, and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic fare.

The story takes place on a mysterious island populated by the banished Prospero (Dave Abbott); his daughter, Miranda (Kandice Woodward); his slave, Caliban (Peter Fischaber); and an airy spirit, Ariel (Hannah Doss). Prospero’s magic creates a tempest and shipwreck, thus bringing Prospero’s friends and enemies to the island. Soon they meet King Alonso and his son (Mark Anazlone and Monte Hunter).

Other characters are Sebastiana (Shawana Shafer), Gonzalo (Brice Donaldson), Antonia (Gloria Roggow), Stephano (Larry Kiner), Trinculo (Frank Baker), Francesco (Bryce Smith) and Andrian (Phillip Fischaber). Spirits are Rachelynn Coffman, Molly Combs, Catherine Jones, Emily Payne and Natalie Rapp.

The production includes music and special effects, including dances, voices and Caribbean surprises. Helping with the production are Teri Galer, Mitch Walters, Ken Kelsey, Gilbert Santillan, Janet Jones, Chelsey Simmons and Sara Lester.

Enid Farmers Market

8-11 a.m. Saturday

Depot at Garriott and Grand

The summer growing season is coming into full swing, and more vendors are providing their products at Enid Farmers Market, held each Saturday at the old depot on Garriott and Grand.
