Christ-centered education main draw for St. Paul’s

ENID — Since 1941, St. Paul’s Lutheran School has offered Enid families an alternative to public education. Children of former students now walk in the halls in their parents’ and grandparents’ footsteps.

The reasons families choose the school probably are as unique as the families themselves, but certain qualities run as themes.

“I think first and foremost we offer Christ-centered education,” said Lisa Brainard, St. Paul’s principal.

Parents Mavick and Ginger Courter, whose daughter, Macy, attends third grade at St. Paul’s, said that’s the reason they choose the school.

“Mainly because it’s a Christian school,” Mavick Courter said. “I went to school here, and my dad went to school here.”

“We attend church here, and we wanted her to have a Lutheran education,” Ginger Courter said. “I think  it’s a wonderful opportunity to have her go here.”

Valerie Osborn, whose son Dylan, also is in third grade, echoes the Courters.

“It’s a loving, Christian environment,” Osborn said. “They have great teachers here.”

The school’s academic likely is a factor as well.

“Our test scores are higher than anyone else in the city,”  Brainard said. “We have high expectations of our students, and they meet and exceed those expectations.”

Great lunches might tip the scales more.

“We offer homemade, hot lunches. We have a great-grandmother who makes all our hot lunches here,” Brainard said.

She pointed to St. Paul’s being the only private school in Enid accredited through Oklahoma State Board of Education, the same as Enid Public Schools.

Other private schools are accredited through Oklahoma Private School Accreditation Commission, Brainard said.

This year’s enrollment at St. Paul’s is about 70 students, spread from all-day pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Third and fourth grades are combined in one classroom, as are fifth and sixth grades.

Tuition is $240 per month for pre-kindergarten and $225 per month for kindergarten through sixth grade.

Members of Lutheran churches get a tuition discount.

Multi-children discounts and scholarships also are available through the school.

Before- and after-school care is available at St. Paul’s.
