Pioneer softball’s Pendleton signs with Hutchinson, Kan.

WAUKOMIS, Okla. — Pioneer All-State catcher Nicole Pendleton signed a softball letter of intent with Hutchinson (Kan.) Junior College on Wednesday.

Pendleton chose Hutchinson over Northwestern Oklahoma State, which also had offered her a scholarship.

“I really liked the school when I visited there,’’ she said. “I want to get two years under me and see if I want to continue the softball thing in college.

“The scholarship is really exciting. My parents spent a lot of money to put me through all the tournaments so college coaches could see me. This is where it pays off. I just have to thank my parents and all my coaches, especially coach (PHS’ Dave) Riesen for all they have done for me.’’

Pendleton hit .390 for the Lady Mustangs as a senior with two home runs and 22 RBI. She scored 48 runs.  Older sister Kayla previously made the All-State team.

“That was my goal,’’ Pendleton said about All-State. “I was really shocked when coach Riesen told me.’’

Her goal at Hutchinson will be to start as a freshman.

“The coach says every year is a new year,’’ she said. “It doesn’t matter who started the year before. You have to earn your position.’’
