Funeral service for Joseph Weldon Slaton, age 92, of Enid, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at the Ladusau-Evans chapel with Rev. Tara Batterman officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends 6-7:30 this evening.
Weldon was born April 1, 1921, in Calisburg, TX, to James and Iva Arnold Slaton and passed away at his home early Friday, June 21, 2013.
He grew up in Hobbs, N.M.
Weldon married Betty Phelps October 6, 1954, in Sherman, TX. They moved to Enid in 1957 from Whitesboro, TX.
He served in the U.S. Army as active staff sergeant, later serving in U.S. Air Force as a paratrooper, 32nd Division Infantry, during WWII.
Weldon worked in the oil fields for more than 45 years. He was called a legend in his own time in the oil fields.
He cherished Betty, his wife of 59 years, as well as the rest of his family. Weldon was a very loving and giving person, with a very compassionate heart.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren and loved gardening. He will be greatly missed by all his family members who love him dearly.
Survivors include his wife Betty, of the home; four sons, Weldon Eugene Slaton and David Lynn Slaton, both of Enid, Joseph Weldon Slaton Jr. and Melvin Slaton, both of Rule, TX; two daughters, Sharon Denise Buffalohead and Lisa Gayle Ratzlaff, both of Enid; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and a grandson, three brothers and four sisters.
