ENID, Okla. —
Mass of Christian burial for Joseph L. Smith, 78, longtime Enid businessman, will be 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Father Joseph Irwin will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.
He was born May 21, 1935, to George C. and Ruth J. Shiflett Smith in Enid and passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, in Enid.
He attended St. Joseph Grade School, Emerson Junior High, and graduated from Enid High School in 1952.
He worked at Oklahoma Glass and Wallpaper until he entered the Navy in 1955. He was honorably discharged from active duty and returned to Oklahoma Glass and Wallpaper as owner and operator until he retired from full-time in 1993. He continued working part time until May 2013.
He married Stella Saeger Nov. 26, 1960, in Oklahoma City.
He was a member of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, a member of Saint Francis Cemetery Board for over 12 years, a member of Knights of Columbus 3rd degree, and a member of the Railroad Museum for over 10 years.
He was married for 52 years to Stella, having four daughters, Kathleen D. Ring and husband Matt, Karen S. Russell and husband John, Sandra K. Ziegler and husband Jerome, and Sharon K. Smith and fiancé Eugene Cotten; one grandson, USMC Lance Cpl. Joseph Ring; granddaughters, Anne Ziegler, Emily Russell, Allison Russell, Olivia Russell, Mary Ziegler, Jayln Ring and Mandy Ring.
He was preceded in death by parents, George and Ruth Smith; sister, Elizabeth Anne Jarboe; special cousins, Al and Pearl Smith; and special Aunt Florence and Uncle Roy Bridgwater.
Memorials may be made in his name to Our Daily Bread, the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma, or Hospice Circle of Love, with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of the funds.
