ENID, Okla. —
Mass of Christian burial for George Richard Waken, 86, will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with Rev. Rajesh Mankena officiating.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with arrangements by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home. Visitation with family will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
George was born to Charles H. and M. Anne Domet Waken on June 6, 1926, in Creston, Iowa, and passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, in Enid.
George grew up in Enid and attended St. Joseph’s School, and graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in Hays, Kan.
He served in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Pearl Harbor during World War II.
After an honorable discharge, George attended Oklahoma A&M, where he was a member of Theta Kappa Phi Fraternity.
He earned a bachelor’s degree and returned to Enid, where he and his two brothers opened up The Boys Markets. He worked there until retirement in 2003.
George was a member of St. Francis, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W., and American Legion. He also was a member of Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club for over 50 years.
George is survived by brother, William Waken and wife Emily of Enid; sister, Gloria Waken Morrison of Austin, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Anne Waken, and brothers, Harvard and Charles.
