Donald William Hughes

ENID — Funeral mass for Donald William Hughes, 87, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, with Rev. Rajesh Mankena officiating. Recitation of the Rosary is 7 p.m. Tuesday at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Don was born March 29, 1926, in Wood River, Neb., to John and Hattie Carlson Hughes and died Wednesday, May 1, 2013, in Enid.

Don grew up in Nebraska.

On Sept. 6, 1948, he married Dorothy Chrapkowski. They moved to Enid in 1957, where he worked as a store accountant with International Harvester.

Don began his career with Federated Insurance in February 1959, retiring in 1981.  He later formed his own agency, Hughes Insurance Consultant, retiring in 2007.

Don was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1044, 4th Degree Assembly 854 of the Knights of Columbus, “Big Band” Dance Club,  No. 1 Oklahoma Polka Club, Civitan, and was an Enid Chamber of Commerce ambassador for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, on Aug. 23, 2012; son, David; his parents; brother, Duane; sister, Ramona; and grandson, Brian Dickerson.

Don is survived by children, Carol and Ron Wyckoff and Diana and Elvin Whitehead, all of Enid, and Roger Hughes of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Karl Hughes of Wood River, Neb.; and sister, Sharon Shrock of Nebraska.

     De was born June 2, 1926, in Medford, the son of George Alexander and Myrtle Biby Hamilton. De graduated from Gore High School. He entered the U.S. Navy on July 3, 1944 and was discharged on June 13, 1946. After De returned to Medford, he and Emma Jean Carrier were married on Sept. 29, 1946, in Nash. De worked as a butcher and retired in 1989. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Medford and was ordained as a Deacon in 1951.
