Albert R. 'Al' Young

Published 4-26-13

ENID, Okla. — Albert R. (Al) Young, 68, Enid, was born on Dec. 29, 1944, in Enid, and passed away on April 9, 2013, at his residence in Enid of natural causes. Memorial services will be Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the Stittsworth Memory Chapel.

Al grew up in Enid and graduated from Enid High School with the class of 1962. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted into the Army National Guard. On Dec. 24, 1963, he married Joan Merrifield and they had two daughters, Tracy and Jamie. As a young man, Al learned to jump and rig parachutes with his brothers and his dad, who was a parachute rigger at Vance Air Force Base. Al was outgoing and adventurous and this nature took him on many journeys. He and his young family moved to Colorado. There, he mastered and instructed skiing and tennis and also guided white water rafting, which he did for many years. He briefly lived in Texas to be near his daughters and grandchildren. Family and friends in Enid eventually drew him back. He had numerous business and sales ventures, which he excelled at. He fell back on the knowledge his father had imparted on him as a parachute rigger at Vance, where he formally retired. After retirement, he kept a small flag and landscaping business going, of which he was very proud and enjoyed deeply. He served as president of the Meadowlake Men’s Golf Association. Al is survived by his parents, Elmer and Maxine Young of Enid; daughters, Tracy Henderson and her husband, Paul of Durango, Colo., and Jamie Moore of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Haeli Young-Henderson, Riley Henderson and Robert Moore all of Colorado; his brothers, Gary Young and his wife, Sherry and Jerry (Duke) Young, all of Enid; five nieces and nephews and their children, as well as numerous life-long friends of Enid. Al was preceded in passing by his grandparents and his biological father, Glen Mackey. The family requests donations be made to Al’s daughters, Tracy and Jamie, in which they will set up a remembrance fund. Remembrances may be shared online at
