Kingfisher, OK — KINGFISHER, Okla. – Hazel Rachel Oppel was born at home, west of McCracken, Kan., to John A. Pfaff and Silvinia Pfaff on Nov. 16, 1938, and the Lord took her home at the age of 75 at her son’s home on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014.

She attended school in McCracken, Kan.

She worked on the family farm with her parents, brothers, and sisters until she met and married Robert A. Oppel on Dec. 28, 1968, in Bazine, Kan. They had three children, Matthew, Miriam and Mark.

She was a member of Kingfisher Emmanuel Lutheran Church and served on the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She served as a voting precinct official for several years at her local polling place.

She was a licensed private pilot, which is how she met Robert, flying into the Hanneman Airport west of Kingfisher, Okla.

Hazel loved farming and raising cattle. She found her most enjoyment checking and tending cattle, and did so until her health would not allow. She battled cancer, and although her fight with cancer was long, her suffering was brief, and she was able to enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas in Oakwood, Okla., with family and friends. She was loved and she loved life and her family. She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, two sisters, two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

She is survived by her son, Matthew R. Oppel, Esq., of Kingfisher and wife Karla; daughter, Miriam Oppel Loewen, PharmD, and husband Travis of Bettendorf, Iowa; and, son, Major Mark J. Oppel, Judge Advocate and wife Sarah of Gazzo, Padova, Italy; five grandsons, Karson Oppel, Konner Oppel, Kilian Oppel, Zachary Oppel and Luke Oppel; brother, Walter Pfaff and wife Judy of Bombay, Calif.; brother, Leon Pfaff and wife Pat of Brownell, Kan.; brother, Roy Pfaff and wife Kay of McCracken, Kan.; brother, Glenn Pfaff of Brownell, Kan.; brother, Ralph Pfaff of Hutchinson, Kan.; brother, Bennie Boley and wife Cindy of Denton, Texas; sister, Lucille Young of Ness City, Kan.; sister, Betty Miller of Ellinwood, Kan.; sister, Laura Morgan and husband Duane of Wakeeney, Kan.; sister, Rebeca Kinyon and husband Doran of Holcomb, Kan.; sister, Eileen Backstrom and husband Larry of Great Bend, Kan.; brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Leona Oppel and Fred and Mildred Oppel; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, family and friends.

Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Kingfisher, Okla. Her final resting place will be Altona Cemetery under the direction of Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home, Hennessey, Okla.

The family requests memorials to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, in lieu of flowers.
