Carl Wayne Murrow

Published 12-1-10

ENID — Funeral for Carl Wayne Murrow will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at Alva Church of God. Rev. Bob Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Alva Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements by Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva.

Carl Wayne, son of Lillie May (Spafford) and Lionel Raymond Murrow was born Dec. 18, 1917, on a farm southwest of Alva. He passed away at his home on Sunday the 28th day of November at the age of 92 years, 11 months and 10 days.

He attended three different rural grade schools, Walnut Grove, Midvalley and Red Bird, but spent most of his growing up years on the farm southeast of Waynoka that his grandfather, James Spafford, homesteaded.

In the fall of 1932, Wayne entered Northwestern High School in Alva. While there he was active in basketball and lettered for two years in that sport. One of the classes he enjoyed most was industrial arts, which was under Professor Stanley May. He always enjoyed wood working. Wayne graduated with the class of 1936 and later enjoyed several reunions with all of his classmates.

After high school he attended Northwestern State College for one year, then he worked various farm jobs.

On Aug. 23, 1942, Wayne married Juanita Graham and immediately entered the Army Air Force. He spent most of his time, while in the service, near Macon, Ga. Juanita was with him quite a bit of the time, as they lived off post. During his time in the service he was awarded the Sharp Shooters Badge with the MI carbine.

On his last Christmas, while in the service, Wayne spent the day on K.P, which was unusual for sergeants, but they were short on privates and corporals. The cook was kind enough to let him take some of the turkey and trimmings home to Juanita.

After he was honorabley discharged, he and Juanita started farming southeast of Alva. They had some good and some bad years farming. Juanita passed away Sept. 18, 1994.

After that Wayne continued to farm until his 84th birthday. He was a member of Alva Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Violet Morse.

Wayne is survived by sisters, Daisy McGolden, Georgia McCray, Mary Belle McCullar and Arbutus North; brother, Sanford Murrow; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial Contributions may be made in his memory to Alva Church of God.
