ENID — Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin J. Markes, 84, will be 10 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2012, at Bison Catholic Church. Father Jim Mickus and Father Joseph Arledge will officiate. Burial will be in Waukomis Cemetery. Visitation with family will be 6-7 Sunday at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Melvin was born and raised on the family farm in Waukomis, OK, July 29, 1928, to Clarence and Barbara (Brauner) Markes and died at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center November 8, 2012.

He graduated from Waukomis High School in 1946.

He started farming on his own in 1946. He built houses with his brother, Andrew, from 1948-1959 and custom-combined from 1960-1964. He retired from farming in 1980.

On August 1, 1950, Melvin married Wilma Ann Matousek. They lived on the farm until 1982, when they moved to Waukomis.

Survivors include children, Leroy Markes of Enid, OK, Sharon Crane (Scott) of Enid, OK, Susan Garrett (Kent) of Tulsa, OK, Amy Gragg (Tod) of Waukomis, OK, Margie Lovell (Brian) of Waukomis, OK, Kathy Grimm Cunningham (Lowell) of Fairview, OK, Debbie McClurg (Mike) of Waukomis, OK, Kenny Markes of Bison, OK,  and Patrick Markes (Kathy) of Bison, OK; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ernest Matousek; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wilma; sister, Anna Marie Conway; and brother Andrew Markes.
