When was your last woo-hoo?

By Ruth Ann Replogle, columnist

When was the last time you had a “woo-hoo” kind of week?

I’m talking about you had such a good day, you couldn’t help but say woo-hoo!

The other day my mother and I were chatting, exchanging family news and our scrapbooking highlights. As we were talking, I told her about recent joys in my life that could only be described in woo-hoo terms:

The cost of propane dropped to $1.80 a gallon. Woo-hoo!

A couple of scrapbooking customers opted to purchase quite a bit of product from me. Woo-hoo!

I found jeans I could fit in, so I bought two pairs. Woo-hoo!

My cell phone malfunctioned and my husband stepped in to sign another contract so I got a new phone for free (as did he). Woo-hoo!

To celebrate his birthday, I took my husband to our favorite hole in the wall. We hadn’t been there in ages. This place has the best barbecue brisket, the kind that melts in your mouth. Woo-hoo!

The list could go on and on, but for a moment, can’t you feel the excitement that comes with woo-hoo?

Difficulties are a part of the human experience, but so are joys.

Don’t you think God has a sense of humor? Especially if we’re made in his image?

He gives me much to smile about, to delight in, to woo-hoo about.

In scripture, joy is the action of rejoicing, expressing gladness, glorifying or exulting.

I think woo-hooing falls in that category.

Sure, there are many trials and tribulations in our journey as I’ve alluded to before in previous writings. But the Lord can give us peace and satisfaction in the midst of the valley as well as moments of laughter, happiness and woo-hoo.

There was a lot of quarreling and scheming and downright dysfunction in Abraham’s tribes. You can read all about it in Genesis. Yet, we get glimpses of joy weaved throughout:

Sarah, nearly 100 years old, finally had the son she had dreamed about and she named him Isaac (which means Laughter). Woo-hoo!

Abraham’s servant Eliezer traveled to find a wife for Isaac and he found the right one, Rebekah, the moment she arrived at the well with a jar on her shoulder. He got down on the ground and praised the Lord right then and there. Woo-hoo!

Leah, who felt unloved by her husband Jacob, was blessed with several children through her own womb and her sister/servant’s womb, including a son she was so excited to have she named him Asher (which means Happy). Woo-hoo!

Joseph, enduring years of suffering and separation from his family, was reunited with his brothers and he wept with joy. Woo-hoo!

“Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us, no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.” Psalm 40: 5

Look for those woo-hoo moments this next week. You’ll be glad you did — they’ll be memories you can hold on to.
