St. Mary’s is granted accreditation by American Association of Blood Banks

St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center has been granted accreditation by American Association of Blood Banks, according the Joe Snodgrass, M.D., medical director.

Accreditation follows an intensive on-site assessment by AABB assessors and establishes the level of medical, technical and administrative performance at St. Mary’s meets or exceeds the standards set by AABB. St. Mary’s joins approximately 1,800 other facilities across the United States and abroad that have earned AABB accreditation.

“The AABB accreditation procedures are voluntary,” said Rick Wallace, CEO. “St. Mary’s has sought AABB accreditation because this program assists facilities around the world in achieving excellence by promoting a level of professional and medial expertise that contributes to quality performance.”

Since 1958, AABB has been engaged in the accreditation of blood banks and transfusion services. Today, its accreditation program assists blood banks, transfusion services, cellular therapy facilities, relationship testing laboratories, immunohematology reference laboratories and perioperative services in determining whether methods, procedures, personnel knowledge, equipment and the physical plant meet established requirements.

The minimum requirements for ac-creditation are based primarily on a set of specific standards for the area in which accreditation is being sought.

AABB is an international non-profit membership organization dedicated to advancing the field of transfusion medicine and related biological therapies. AABB set standards, accredits facilities, publishes books and publications and produces educational programs to improve patient and donor safety.
